Losing weight is a challenge for most. You try so many diets, healthy eating regimens, diet pills, diet drinks, fast paced workouts that leave you on the floor helpless and gasping for air and water, so much more. However, you never really get the results that you are looking for. You never see lasting results.
I am a mom of two and in both pregnancies I gained almost 60 lbs.! Yes, I said almost 60lbs. I tried to make healthy eating choices while pregnant, but the pregnancy cravings are real and I was definitely on the struggle bus trying to contain those wild cravings. Let’s just say, the craving monster won 90% of the time! It was a T.C.K.O. (total CRAVING knockout) and I had no chance of winning from the jump. If you are a mom, you KNOW exactly what I mean. 🤣
So, when the time came to focus on getting the added weight off, there were very simple things that I did to help myself begin kicking off the weight. If you are a breastfeeding mom, breastfeeding will give you a boost with weight loss. One of the most important things that you have to do while breastfeeding is to drink more water! Drinking more water daily helps you to stay hydrated enough for yourself and the baby so you can produce the amount of breastmilk that you need.
This constant consumption of water practice, little do you know, is perfect for practicing this lifestyle change of drinking MORE water. Yes, the key to losing weight is to develop healthy lifestyle habits. One important thing to keep in mind is that losing weight isn’t a “get rich quick scheme” or rather in this case, a “get snatched quick scheme.” It just doesn’t work that way, not if you are doing it in a manner that is sustainable and healthy. You have to shift your mindset for losing weight as a change in your lifestyle. Essentially, that is all weight loss is about. It is about making realistic lifestyle changes that you can maintain on a consistent basis.

Yes! That’s really all there was to it. Incorporating these 4 things consistently has helped me lose almost 40 lbs since I started this self care journey. Self care is simply the act of taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy. Self care and losing weight go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other.

Understand your reason why
Knowing “why” you are losing weight is an important part of getting your mindset right. Are you losing weight so you can become healthier? Is it to lower your blood pressure? Are you losing weight because you want your “pre pregnancy” body back so you can get into your favorite outfit again in time for summer? Whatever YOUR reason, it is important to have an idea to focus on so you know what you are working towards.
Understand Your Negative Triggers
Knowing what your negative triggers are will help you identify an unhealthy choice before it happens. For example, I realized that when I am stressed and hungry, my first food response was fast food pizza. I became an emotional eater when I was triggered by stressful demands on my body. Stressful demands of day to day life as a mom and playing the balancing act game. When you are aware of these triggers, you are able to identify them before they happen and make better decisions in those moments.
Get off the scale
Knowing your weight 3 times a day, every day is not necessary or helpful to your success in your journey to lose weight. One tip that you can implement, if you absolutely need to see your weight daily is to only weigh once a day and it should be first thing in the morning before breakfast. After that, put the scale away, girl, until the next day. 😊Other than that, try sticking to once per week.
Once you shift your mindset, everything else just seems to fall into place.

Drink more water! Jazz up that water so you can drink more water. Here is one of my favorite ways to enhance my water! It is the perfect summer twist to staying hydrated and it tastes so good too!
Watermelon Agua Fresca Recipe
4 cups cubed seedless watermelon
1/2 cup water
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
2 tbsp Monk Fruit in the Raw sweetener (or to taste)
- In a blender, puree the watermelon with 1/2 cup of water until smooth.
- Pour the watermelon puree through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher, discarding
- Stir in the lime juice and Monk Fruit sweetener until well combined.
- Taste and adjust lemon juice or sweetener as desired.
- In the pitcher, add ice and stir to combine.
- Serve the agua fresca over ice, and garnish with fresh lime wedges if desired. Enjoy!
Why walking daily is good for self care and weight loss:
Self care is anything you do to take care of your self so you can be physically, emotionally, and mentally well. Walking is one of those activities is that takes care of all three at once. Walking is an excellent simple exercise that is not high impact, but keeps you moving and your heart pumping. It is great for emotional and mental self care as well because it boosts your mood and increases your energy level.
Tips for consuming less sugar:
For me, I love sweets, specifically vanilla bean ice cream with chocolate brownies. Cookies and Cream ice cream was my weakness too. And vanilla ice cream with my mom’s warm peach cobbler was just evil for me. Even though I LOVED eating this, I was aware that is was a weakness for me and a big part of me losing weight. I loved my sweets, but I loved feeling good even more. So, when you know you have a weakness for sweets, there are simple things that you can do to help yourself move to a healthier practice with eating sweets so you can get the results you are looking for. Here are some simple suggestions and tips.
- Identity one day a month, no more than two where you can indulge all day in the sweets of your choice. The remainder of the month… no sweet treats!
- Do not have sweet treats easily accessible until you develop a strong “ will power” to overcome the sugar cravings and not give in to the sugar cravings.
- Keep healthy sweet alternatives in the house to help on those days that you really are struggling. For example, fruit, yogurt, granola, are all great substitutes. The key is making sure it’s always readily available so you have a better chance of not making a bad decision
